South Africa has a new MVNO – PnP Mobile – launched by the major retailer Pick n Pay.
According to South Africa’s Business Tech business news website, the new service – which will be prepaid – will run on the MTN mobile network. It will offer SIM-based access to services that will include airtime and data.
As you might expect, the retail tie-in has allowed for some value-adds, including a reward system that links free data to both shopping and mobile spend. The associated rewards for mobile top-ups and in-store expenditure will range from 250 MB to 2.5 GB each month. Data rewards will be loaded onto a customer’s SIM card after each shop.
Customers signing up for the service will find that registration for the new PnP SIM card is quick and painless, involving no physical filling-in of forms; the system uses a new paperless facility. This is expected to launch in 500 selected Pick n Pay stores before the end of the year.
PnP Mobile will join Pick n Pay’s growing list of value-added and financial service offerings.
Established in 1967, Pick n Pay is the second-largest supermarket chain store in South Africa. It also operates in a number of other regions in southern Africa.
South African press reports suggest that the Pick n Pay-owned Boxer brand is also expected to launch a SIM card soon.
